2017 District 12 OHA Pollinator Project Grant Report
The two hundred dollar grant was divided equally among three societies: Porcupine, Timmins, and Englehart.
Englehart and District Horticultural Society
Purchased and planted plant 5 pollinator friendly plants for the Hummingbird-friendly gardens that were established in 2016 at the Hilliardton Marsh and donated 6 pollinator homes to be placed on poles near the pollinator gardens. An Englehart Society member purchased the wood and built the pollinator homes. The society completed one mason bee home and filled 3 more homes with hollow stems, pine cones, and wooden tubes with holes of various sizes. Two empty frames were filled by local school children visiting at the Marsh.

Timmins Horticultural Society
Purchased two mason bee houses and one butterfly habitat box. Additional funding for these purchases was provided by the Timmins Horticultural Society. One of the pollen bee houses and the butterfly habitat box will be installed at the community gardens at the Timmins Museum’s Hollinger House, and the second pollen bee house will be installed at the Ukrainian gardens at Kobzar Park in Timmins. All these gardens are maintained by our Society members, and contain a variety of pollinator-friendly species of annuals and perennials. Museum staff conduct tours of Heritage House throughout the summer season, allowing the opportunity for information about the habitat boxes and the Pollinator Initiative to be given to the general public.
