District 12 Report for OHA 2017 Annual Report
There are seven societies in the District which covers a large area of forests, farms, and lakes in Northeastern Ontario. Three of the societies added pollinator habitat in their communities with funds from the OHA. All societies planted some red and white in celebration of Canada 150.
Cochrane
The Flower and Vegetable Show held in conjunction with the 105th Cochrane Fall Fair had a particularly large number of entries in the youth vegetable collection class. The Cochrane Society chose and planted flowers at the Board of Trade Office, Polar Bear Habitat, Post Office and Library. Well attended workshops held at the library included Vegetable Growing Bins, Fairy Gardens, and Christmas Door Hanger Arrangements. There was a continued partnership with school children for the "One Potato- Two Potato Project" whereby each child kept half of his/her community garden potato crop and donated the other half to the Food Bank.
Englehart
A highlight of the year was our Youth Garden competition with 17 entries instead of the usual 7-9. The flower show was replaced by Mini competitions with classes for children at 5 of our general meetings. Presentations at general meetings included growing giant vegetables, simple floral designs, wreath making and ‘Pumpkins Galore’. Workshops included making bee houses, bird nesting baskets, and Yule logs. In summer there was a tour of local gardens and a potluck supper with and auction. Native pollinator plants were added at Hilliardton Marsh with an OAH grant. We maintain a website, a Face book page and distribute a monthly newsletter.
Iroquois Falls
The highlight of 2017 was partnering with the Municipality and a local school in placing red and white pots of flowers around town in commemoration of Canada's 150. The Mayor emphasized the importance of such partnerships as a speaker at the District 12 Fall Planning Meeting which was very successfully hosted by our society in September. The society continued partnerships in flower bed planting at the Manor, Post Office, and Museum.
Kapuskasing
During our 88th year, we held a plant sale, toured a local cheese factory, hosted guest speakers covering topics such as farming in the north, beastly abodes in the garden, horticulture in China, and silk Christmas arrangements. Five individuals attended the AGM in Kirkland Lake and two members attended the OHA Convention. Red and white tulips were planted at the town entrance in celebration of Canada 150. The location of the l Flower & Vegetable Show was moved to accommodate the needs of forest fire evacuees. In partnership with the Healthy Kids Program, four members helped two grade six classes assembly tower gardens for vegetable growing.

Porcupine
We began the year by planting a pollinator garden with funds from an OHA grant. All summer, we kept busy maintaining many flower beds; some at the Anglican Church, eight large beds in the adjacent park, and 8 raised 4x8 garden plots. We did a major planting for Gold Corp, a local mining company, along their new walking trail. We planted old pieces of mining equipment with perennials. There were workshops and presentations, herb fest, planting spiral gardens, and local greenhouse owner. We took two road trips, one to Kapuskasing to visit the Demonstration Farm and the other to the Iroquois Falls Market and Mennonite Store.
Timmins
May- June-Successful and well attended Plant, Yard & Bake Sale with coffee and refreshments. Community plantings in 4 different locations. Tulip Walk (viewing 4 city gardens) and refreshments. We had a good number of exhibits, draws, refreshments, and many visitors. In September, we had a Successful Fall Plant, Yard and Bake/Preserves Sale.
